BMW 7 Series F01/F02: The Greatness of the German Flagship

1.webp

Introduction: Legend of Bavarian Automotive Industry

The BMW 7 Series is not just a car; it's the flagship of the legendary German manufacturer, a symbol of prestige and luxury, embodying engineering excellence and technological progress. The fifth generation of this executive sedan, known under the factory index F01 (standard wheelbase) and F02 (extended version), has become one of the most notable and recognizable vehicles in the upper segment.

The premiere of this generation took place in the summer of 2008 on Red Square in Moscow - an unusual location for a world presentation, emphasizing the importance of the Russian market for the Bavarian company. Later, the car was presented at the Paris and Los Angeles auto shows, and in the autumn of the same year, the first sales began.

Today we will examine the features of this model, which can now be purchased on the secondary market at a very attractive price. We will delve into the technical specifications, design features, and consumer qualities of the fifth generation BMW "Seven."

Model Range and Body Features

The fifth generation BMW 7 Series was produced predominantly in two body versions: the standard F01 version and the extended F02, which has a 140 mm longer wheelbase, creating additional comfort for rear passengers. For special clients, there were also special versions: the armored F03 modification and the hybrid F04.

The design of the "Seven" was developed under the leadership of Adrian van Hooydonk and represented a significant step forward compared to the previous, more conservative fourth generation (E65/E66). The car acquired more harmonious proportions, an elegant and at the same time dynamic appearance. Characteristic features included a more restrained rear design compared to its predecessor, signature kidney grilles, and striking front LED headlights.

The F01/F02 body is distinguished by high torsional rigidity due to the extensive use of high-strength steels. The construction also utilizes aluminum elements, including the hood, front fenders, doors, and trunk lid, which helped reduce the weight of the vehicle.

Engine Range: From Economical to Super Powerful

Gasoline Engines

At the foundation of the gasoline engine line was the inline six-cylinder three-liter N52B30 - the only naturally aspirated engine in the range. This engine, installed in the 730i model, produced 258 hp and featured a balanced operating character. Despite its apparent simplicity, this engine had a Valvetronic system at the intake and a double Vanos on the shafts - technologies regulating the phases of gas distribution and the height of valve lift.

Following it was the more powerful six-cylinder turbocharged N54B30, installed in the 740i version and producing 326 hp. After the 2012 facelift, this engine was replaced by the N55B30, also turbocharged, but with a single twin-turbo instead of two regular ones.

The 750i version was equipped with a V-shaped eight-cylinder N63B44 engine with a displacement of 4.4 liters with two turbochargers, producing 407 hp. After the 2012 update, it was replaced by the modernized N63B44TU with increased output.

At the top of the model range was the majestic 760i with a 6-liter V12 (N74B60) producing 544 hp and 750 Nm of torque. This engine combined the highest power with amazing smoothness of operation.

Diesel Engines

The diesel range was based on a six-cylinder three-liter N57 unit in various tuning versions:

  • 730d - 245 hp (base version)
  • 740d - 306 hp (version with twin turbocharging)
  • 750d - 381 hp (top version, which appeared after the facelift)

Diesel models traditionally enjoyed popularity in Europe due to their economy and impressive torque.

Hybrid Version

The short-lived hybrid version F04 was equipped with a six-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor with a power of 15 kW. This modification did not gain widespread distribution and was discontinued after the 2012 facelift.

Transmission and Drive

Before the 2012 facelift, most BMW 7 Series modifications were equipped with six-speed automatic ZF 6HP transmissions, and only the hybrid version and top-of-the-line 760i had the eight-speed ZF 8HP "automatic." After the update, all models switched to eight-speed transmissions.

By drive type, the "Sevens" were divided into rear- and all-wheel drive. Initially, the 730i, 740i, and 730d versions were rear-wheel drive only, while the 740d was equipped with all-wheel drive. After the 2012 facelift, all-wheel drive variants appeared in almost all modifications except the base ones.

The xDrive all-wheel drive system provided excellent road grip and stability on any surface without compromising comfort and handling.

Chassis and Handling

The fifth generation "Seven" received a fully independent suspension: double wishbone in front, multi-link in the rear. Most versions were equipped with pneumatic suspension of the rear axle, providing a constant ground clearance regardless of the vehicle's load.

As an option, the Dynamic Drive system was offered, which minimized roll in turns with the help of active anti-roll bars, as well as Integral Active Steering - a system of active rear wheel steering, improving maneuverability at low speeds and stability at high speeds.

Various suspension settings were available for the BMW 7 Series: standard, comfort, and sport. The Dynamic Damping Control system allowed the driver to select the damper operating mode depending on road conditions and preferences.

Despite its impressive dimensions, the F01/F02 "Seven" demonstrated excellent handling for a car of its class. Steering responses were precise, body roll was moderate, and road grip was reliable. At the same time, comfort was at the highest level, especially in "Comfort" mode.

Interior and Equipment

The interior of the fifth generation BMW 7 Series is a true work of art. Only high-quality materials are used here: soft Nappa or Merino leather, natural wood (up to 9 different finishing options), aluminum, and carbon fiber.

The dashboard is designed in the traditional BMW style with a focus on the driver. On the center console was the controller of the iDrive system, which in this generation became significantly more user-friendly and intuitive.

Special attention was paid to the comfort of rear passengers, especially in the extended F02 version. Here one could order individual seats with massage function, heating, and ventilation, as well as a dedicated climate zone and multimedia system with two screens embedded in the backs of the front seats.

The list of available equipment was impressive:

  • Four-zone climate control
  • Panoramic roof with electric drive
  • Night vision system
  • Bang & Olufsen audio system with 16 speakers
  • Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function
  • Surround view system
  • Head-Up Display (information projection onto the windshield)
  • Active climate control seats
  • Air ionizer and aromatherapy

Many technological solutions first introduced in the 7 Series F01/F02 later became standard for the entire industry.

2012 Facelift: Evolution of Perfection

In 2012, the BMW 7 Series F01/F02 underwent a serious update. External changes were not too significant - modernized bumpers, updated optics, a slightly modified radiator grille. However, technically the car underwent significant evolution.

Main changes after the facelift:

  • All modifications switched to an eight-speed automatic transmission
  • The range of all-wheel drive versions was expanded
  • A new top diesel modification 750d appeared
  • The F04 hybrid version was discontinued
  • The power and efficiency of most engines were increased
  • The ergonomics and functionality of the iDrive multimedia system were improved
  • The list of standard and optional equipment was expanded

Technical Maintenance and Operation

The BMW 7 Series F01/F02 is a complex technological vehicle requiring regular qualified maintenance. The most trouble-free are considered to be the naturally aspirated N52 engine and the diesel N57, distinguished by good margin of durability.

Engine Maintenance Recommendations

Gasoline Engines

  • For the N52B30 (730i), it is recommended to regularly check the efficiency of the electric water pump, preventing temperature regime violations
  • For N54B30 and N55B30 (740i), it is important to monitor the condition of the lubrication and cooling systems
  • For V8 N63B44 (750i), special attention should be paid to the cooling system and timely replacement of oil scraper rings
  • For V12 N74B60 (760i), it is necessary to monitor the condition of the turbochargers and the double Vanos system

Diesel Engines

  • For all N57 modifications, regular cleaning of the intake system and swirl flaps from deposits is recommended
  • The condition of the crankshaft damper pulley should be monitored
