However, this convenience comes at a price — over time, the guide rollers may wear out, causing the door to make noise when driving on uneven roads.

The Volkswagen T5 interior is spacious and functional. Depending on the configuration, the vehicle can accommodate up to nine passengers while providing enough space for luggage. The seats can be transformed in various ways, making the interior adaptable to different tasks.

The Volkswagen T5 dashboard is ergonomic and intuitive. Controls are located within easy reach of the driver, and the instrument panel provides all necessary information. In higher trim levels, the vehicle is equipped with a multimedia system with navigation, climate control, and other modern features.

Air Conditioning System

The air conditioning system in the T5 is a separate topic for discussion. Passenger versions have two radiators, allowing effective cooling of the entire cabin. However, the air conditioning compressor has a limited service life — on average 3-5 years.

Diesel Engines

Pre-facelift T5 models were equipped with 1.9 TDI (four-cylinder) and 2.5 TDI (five-cylinder) engines.

The 1.9 TDI engine, despite its not-too-high power, has proven itself as a reliable and durable unit. With proper maintenance, this engine can travel up to 400,000 km and more. The key point in maintenance is not to skimp on quality engine oil and regularly inspect the main components.

The 2.5 TDI engine is more powerful but also more controversial. Unlike the 1.9 TDI, it uses a gear-driven timing mechanism rather than a belt drive. The cylinder surface is formed by a special coating on the lightweight alloy block. This engine requires special attention during operation. In particular, prolonged driving at low RPMs in high gears is not recommended, as friction pairs may lack sufficient lubrication in such a mode.

After the facelift, the T5 received new 2.0 TDI engines with Common Rail injection. These engines are significantly more reliable than their predecessors and can travel more than 500,000 km. Of particular note is the version with a bi-turbo system and 180 hp, which provides impressive dynamics for such a large vehicle.

Petrol Engines

Volkswagen T5 with petrol engines are less common than those with diesel engines, mainly due to higher fuel consumption. But those who chose a petrol engine got reliable and undemanding technology.

Throughout the production period, the T5 was available with a two-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine with a cast-iron block and a single camshaft causes almost no problems for owners. The only requirement is timely replacement of the timing belt and attention to ignition system sensors.

The most powerful engine for the T5 was the naturally aspirated V6 with a displacement of 3.2 liters and a cast-iron block, known as the VR6. This is also a very reliable engine, capable of easily traveling 500,000 km. The only significant argument against it is fuel consumption of 15-18 liters per 100 km.

After the facelift, the VR6 engine was replaced by the 2.0 TSI — a representative of the EA888 family, second generation. This engine is generally decent but requires more attentive care.

Transmission

Manual Gearbox

Manual transmissions on the Volkswagen T5 are considered reliable. The five-speed gearbox is somewhat less durable than the six-speed. In the former, the rear bearing of the primary shaft may wear out, and there may also be wear of synchronizers and problems with the gear selection mechanism.

Almost all versions of the T5 with a manual gearbox are equipped with a dual-mass flywheel. When used with a diesel engine, it serves approximately 200,000 km. There are kits for replacing the dual-mass flywheel with a single-mass one, but reviews of such a solution are contradictory.

Automatic Transmission

Pre-facelift Volkswagen T5 with 2.5 TDI and 3.2 VR6 engines were equipped with 09K automatic transmissions. Essentially, this is the Aisin TF61SN transmission — a very decent unit that, with proper care, can travel more than 300,000 km. The recommended oil change interval is once every 60,000 km.

After the facelift, vehicles with new 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines received a preselective seven-speed DQ500 gearbox. This is one of the best DSG transmissions, characterized by reliability and high durability. With oil changes every 50,000 km, it can travel more than 300,000 km.

All-Wheel Drive

The Volkswagen T5 was also offered with all-wheel drive, where the rear axle is connected via a fourth-generation Haldex clutch. This clutch has a filter that requires periodic replacement. It is also recommended to remove the electric pump and clean its screen. The electric pump itself usually lasts about 200,000 km, after which worn brushes and a worn collector may need replacement.

The driveshaft to the clutch for the rear axle drive is suspended on two bearings. The front bearing may require replacement after approximately 200,000 km, while the rear one lasts longer. If the rear bearing needs replacement, you will have to go to a specialized workshop, as it comes together with the driveshaft.

Suspension

The front suspension of the Volkswagen T5 is designed according to the MacPherson scheme. One of the most frequently replaced components is the bearings of the struts. Their lifespan depends on operating conditions, including road quality and the weight of cargo being transported. Signs of wear may include crunching, squeaking, and uneven force when turning the front wheels.

When replacing the strut bearings, replacement of the stabilizer links is often required as well. The bushings of the front arms and the ball joint are sold separately, with the rear bushing usually lasting longer.

The wheel bearings of all T5 wheels are pressed into the hubs. Interestingly, the hubs for this vehicle were taken from the Volkswagen Touareg.

Special attention should be paid to the splines of the inner right CV joint. The splined part there is insufficiently protected from dirt and water, which can lead to the washing out of lubricant and subsequent wear of the splines. There is a special original lubricant that does not wash out but hardens in the splined connection. If unsuitable lubricant is used, it will quickly disappear, leading to jerks and impacts when starting.

The rear suspension of the T5 usually lasts longer than the front. The bushings of the rear arms, if necessary, are sold separately.

Steering

The Volkswagen T5 steering rack is hydraulic. With age, play may develop in it, and with high mileage, fluid leaks may occur at the hose fittings and near the power steering cooler radiator.

On versions with the 2.5 TDI engine, the power steering pump is driven by a gear from the gear-driven timing mechanism, which is located on the flywheel side. When the seals wear out, the pump may suck in engine oil, which will lead to an increase in the fluid level in the expansion tank. In this case, urgent replacement of the pump or repair with seal replacement is required, as engine oil can damage the steering components.

Steering rods are one of the weak points of the vehicle. Originally, they are sold as a set with steering tips.

Practical Recommendations for Owners

  1. Regular Engine Maintenance: Don't skimp on quality engine oil and observe its change intervals. This is especially important for diesel engines.
  2. Suspension Check: Periodically check the condition of the suspension, especially if you often drive on uneven roads or transport heavy loads.
  3. Air Conditioning System Maintenance: Regularly check the refrigerant level and compressor condition.
  4. Attention to Transmission: Change the oil in the gearbox in a timely manner. For automatic transmission, it is recommended to do this every 50,000-60,000 km.
  5. Control of CV Joint Splines: When servicing the vehicle, don't forget about the splines of the inner right CV joint. Use the correct lubricant.
  6. Steering Check: Pay attention to the appearance of play in the steering rack and monitor the fluid level in the power steering system.

Despite some peculiarities and potential problems, with proper maintenance and timely repair of malfunctions, the T5 remains an excellent choice for both personal use and business.
